Muhammad Taqi Usmani, commonly known as Mufti Taqi Usmani, is one of the most respected contemporary Islamic scholars in the world. He is widely recognized for his deep knowledge in Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh), Hadith, and Islamic finance.
He was born on 5 October 1943 in Deoband into a highly scholarly family. His father, Muhammad Shafi Usmani, was a leading Islamic scholar and the former Grand Mufti of Pakistan. Mufti Taqi Usmani later moved to Karachi, where he spent most of his life.
He studied at the famous Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Karachi, where he specialized in Islamic sciences and later became a senior teacher. He has taught Sahih al-Bukhari and other major Hadith books for many years, training thousands of students from around the world.
Mufti Taqi Usmani also served as a judge (Justice) at the Federal Shariat Court of Pakistan and later at the Shariat Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. His legal work focused on aligning laws with Islamic principles.
One of his most significant contributions is in the field of Islamic banking and finance. He played a key role in developing interest-free financial systems and has advised many Islamic banks worldwide. Because of this, he is considered a global authority in Islamic finance.
He has written numerous books in Urdu, Arabic, and English on topics such as:
