12 Rabi-ul-Awwal (Youm-e-Wiladat / Mawlid an-Nabi (PBUH)) is the day widely observed by many Muslims as the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the last messenger of Islam. It falls on the 12th day of the third Islamic month, Rabi-ul-Awwal.
This day is associated with the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Makkah in the year 570 CE, often referred to as the “Year of the Elephant.” His birth is considered a great blessing for humanity, as he was sent as a guide, mercy, and role model for all people. The Qur’an describes him as “Rahmat-ul-lil-‘Alameen” (Mercy for all worlds).
For many Muslims, Youm-e-Wiladat is a time to remember the life, character, and teachings of the Prophet (PBUH). His life (Seerah) reflects honesty, kindness, patience, justice, humility, and compassion. He transformed society by spreading the message of Tawheed (oneness of Allah), equality, and moral excellence.
Different Muslim communities observe this day in different ways. In many countries, people hold gatherings where the Seerah (biography) of the Prophet (PBUH) is discussed, and poems (Naat) in his praise are recited. Mosques and homes may be decorated, and people send blessings (Durood) upon the Prophet (PBUH) in abundance. Acts of charity, feeding the poor, and helping others are also encouraged as expressions of love and gratitude.
At the same time, it is important to note that Muslims have different views regarding the celebration of this day. Some consider it a جائز (permissible) way to express love and respect for the Prophet (PBUH), as long as it stays within Islamic teachings. Others believe that since such celebrations were not practiced by the Prophet (PBUH) or his companions, it should not be observed as a formal religious event. Despite these differences, all Muslims agree on the importance of loving, respecting, and following the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
In essence, 12 Rabi-ul-Awwal serves as a reminder for Muslims to reconnect with the message of Islam, follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH), and adopt his noble character in daily life. It is not just about remembering his birth, but about living according to his teachings and spreading peace, mercy, and goodness in society.
