Complete Guide to Hajj: A Spiritual Journey Step by Step
Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for Muslims who are able to perform it. Every year, millions of Muslims from around the world gather in Makkah to fulfill this sacred journey. Hajj is not just a physical act of worship—it is a deep spiritual experience that teaches patience, humility, and complete submission to Allah.
In this blog, you will find a simple and complete step-by-step guide to performing Hajj.
Entering the State of Ihram
The journey of Hajj begins with Ihram, a special spiritual state.
Pilgrims prepare by taking a bath (Ghusl) and wearing simple clothing:
Men wear two white sheets
Women wear modest, simple dress
Then, they make the intention:
“Labbayk Allahumma Hajjan” (O Allah, here I am to perform Hajj)
Pilgrims continuously recite the Talbiyah:
Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, innal hamda wan-ni‘mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak
This powerful chant expresses complete devotion to Allah.
Arrival in Makkah: Tawaf
Upon reaching Makkah, pilgrims perform Tawaf, which means circling the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction.
Each round begins at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). If it is not possible to touch it, pilgrims simply gesture towards it.
After completing Tawaf:
Pray two rak‘ah
Drink Zamzam water
Sa’i: Walking Between Safa and Marwah
Next comes Sa’i, the act of walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times.
This ritual reminds us of Hajar (AS), who ran between these hills searching for water for her son Ismail (AS). It is a powerful lesson in trusting Allah.
Trimming or Shaving Hair
After Sa’i:
Men either shave or trim their hair
Women cut a small portion of their hair
For those performing Hajj Tamattu‘, this completes their Umrah.
The Main Days of Hajj
8th Dhul Hijjah – Day of Tarwiyah
Pilgrims enter Ihram again (if needed) and travel to Mina, where they spend the day and night in prayer and reflection.
9th Dhul Hijjah – Day of Arafah
This is the most important day of Hajj.
Pilgrims gather at the plain of Arafat, standing in worship, making sincere dua, and seeking forgiveness.
The Prophet ﷺ said that Hajj is Arafah, highlighting its importance.
Pilgrims also pray Dhuhr and Asr together.
Night at Muzdalifah
After sunset, pilgrims travel to Muzdalifah:
Pray Maghrib and Isha together
Spend the night under the open sky
Collect pebbles for the next ritual
10th Dhul Hijjah – Eid Day
This is a busy and important day. Pilgrims perform:
Rami – Throw 7 pebbles at the largest pillar (Jamarah)
Qurbani – Offer sacrifice
Shave/trim hair
Perform Tawaf al-Ziyarah in Makkah
Days of Tashreeq (11th–12th–13th)
During these days, pilgrims stay in Mina and perform Rami each day by throwing pebbles at three pillars:
Small
Middle
Big
Pilgrims may leave after the 12th or stay until the 13th.
Farewell Tawaf
Before leaving Makkah, pilgrims perform the Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wida) as a final act of worship.
